Leadership & Development

Leadership and sailing go hand in hand

Real growth begins outside your comfort zone

A 60-metre long pressure cooker. Wylde Swan is the ideal platform for getting out your comfort zone and getting a start on personal growth. You’ll immediately have to confront yourself and you’ll find that the team needs each of its member. And… you can’t just walk away from a situation. Everyone’s in the same boat and not working together is simply not an option.

On board the Wylde Swan the world slows down. There’s no rush and time is suddenly in abundance. The rhythm of the day and the cadence of the sea create the space and peace for really being able to concentrate on your own development and for the group process. Without distractions.

A personal leadership or team programme requires an environment that offers challenge. Real growth begins outside your comfort zone and this is where the trainer or coach can do their best work.

The Wylde Swan is suited to a wide range of leadership voyages, for groups of 5 to 30 people. Businesses can organise their own training sessions on board but can also draw on the experience of our training partners. We work well with Team Coaching Zone.

Life on board

Life on board varies according to where we’re sailing and the elements. If we’re at open sea a lot, then a 24-hour system works brilliantly. If we’re more often closer to land (so maybe at anchor or moored in a harbour), then we try and maintain more of a day and night rhythm.

But the real progress is at sea, for instance during the night watches while sailing. That’s when the one-to-one chats or and small group discussions start easily. You listen to each other more carefully in the dark and it’s easier to share sensitive subjects.

We often use a three-watch system on board with 4 hours on and 8 hours off. Everyone’s usually awake between 10am and 4pm so that’s when a group programme can take place.

Food on board: from haute cuisine to hearty

We make sure you’re well fed on board. The Wylde Swan has a professional galley where the most wonderful smells are created. It may be that three chefs are preparing fresh, local, seasonal produce for a luxury on-deck reception or a seven-course dinner. Or it could be our chef cooking up a hearty, delicious meal to keep a group of sailors on their legs in rough weather. We can cater to different diets and allergies. Sometimes cooking on board can be an interesting activity for guests sailing with us.

Sleeping

The first thing you notice is that most of the private bunks for our guests are located in the ship’s huge belly, what we call the Main Hold. Living together on board is a fantastic experience whatever your age. It means that the one of the most important parts of the sea voyage, the group process, can develop. The group process, and your role within the group, is incredibly important on our leadership voyages.

Meetings, workshops and consultations

There are a variety of large and small rooms on board and areas on the deck suited for one-to-one discussions, working in small groups or working as a large group.

Communication

As soon as the Wylde Swan is a few sea miles off the coast, a sense of peace descends on the ship: there’s no reception anymore. Can you imagine it? A day without your mobile phone? It’s only natural when you’re on board the Wylde Swan. There’s no contact with the outside world and everything is about the here and now.

Of course, there are other ways for the Wylde Swan to be in 24/7 contact with the outside world. In case of emergency, we can always be reached and can always reach others.

During the voyage, the captain speaks at least once a day about what the current situation is, where the ship is sailing and what the plans are. These are always good moments.

And there’s always, 24/7, someone you can immediately talk to, ask your questions to or discuss things with.

The Wylde Swan has the following means of communication:

Safety

The Wylde Swan sails under the Dutch flag and meets all requirements set worldwide, European-wide and nationally. Our crew’s certificates are also always up-to-date and we carry out exercises on board to practice for different situations and to maintain a high understanding of safety.

The crew

Our crew’s passion is to provide a challenging and hospitable environment for our guests. The Wylde Swan crew are well-trained professional sailors with some of the crew being volunteers.
