About Tall Ships Races

The Tall Ships Races is a huge event involving Tall Ships, small Ship and yachts. These days the vessels take part in races, Cruise in Company (non-competitive) leg, and maritime festivals in harbours.   The trainees don’t need to have any sailing experience to join, as they will be provided with Sail Training by the crews. They take active part in sailing the vessels, trying to cross the finish line before the others. They learn to steer, navigate, trim the sails and keep lookout for other vessels.   But it’s about more than sailing! In ports, a celebration of international friendships lasts for four days. While the spectators enjoy visiting the ships, listening to concerts and taking in the unique atmosphere of an outdoor family event, the trainees and crews take part in the Crew Parade, Crew Party, competitions and excursions. This is the time to meet people from other vessels and exchange the stories from the high seas!

Frederikstad

100km south of Oslo, Fredrikstad is a coastal town, on the East side of the Oslofjord. Fredrikstad has a mix of old and new – The ‘Gamlebyen’ Old Town is a well-preserved star fort, across the water from the modern waterfront. Visitors can also visit the 16th-Century Kongsten fort, or Scandinavia’s largest model railway. Frederikstad will be a host port for the Tall Ship Races 2019.

Bergen

Bergen is the gateway to the Fjords of Norway and a well-established cruise port. It’s an international city packed with history and tradition, a big city with small-town charm and atmosphere. Stroll around old streets and alleyways, and mingle with the crowds at the Fish Market. Saunter along the listed wooden buildings at Bryggen to the old fortress at Bergenhus, or call in at one of Bergen’s museums and galleries. The panoramic views of the city, the fjord and the ocean are breathtaking.
